Abstract

The goal of this tutorial/workshop is primarily to discuss how to do qualitative research in AI/ML, how to shift assumptions and consequently, best practices for studying ‘AI on the Ground’ outside of the global North. Further, we are interested in exploring the limits of such an approach as well as what computational ethnographies reveal in-turn about the constraints and politics of existing social, political and information architectures aka “the field” or “the ground”. Also, following sociologist Angele Christin’s provocation, we want to think collectively and publicly through what it might mean to enroll algorithms and features of ML systems to develop the field of grounded AI research.
